The beautiful Funes - Villnöss valley, here, where Reinhold Messner
spend his childhood and young days, you will find peace and regeneration in one
of the most beautiful und quiet valleys of the Dolomites. Dreamlike landscapes,
wide and green meadows, many small hamlets and farms, and larch forests, which
in autumn show their luminous colours. Unforgettable mountain pleasures ... the
Puez-Odle with the high mountain pastures of the Funes valley and the
mountainous region of the Dolomites – this is the area of many protected plants
and animals. This region is part of the UNESCO World Nature Heritage, of which
the Odle mountains are the landmark and eye-catcher.
The Funes valley branches off to the east between Bressanone
and Chiusa. On a hilltop above the valley lies Gudon with the Castle Sommo. The
gentle low mountain ranges of the Isarco valley, on which grows a very good
wine, lead to the impressive mountains of the Dolomites: the Odle of Eores in
the nord-east and the peaks of the Odle in the south-east, the Fermeda towers,
the Forcella Mesdì, the Sas Rigais, the Furchetta or the Campiglio tower. The
village of S. Pietro is the principal town of the valley, to this village
belongs the hamlet of Nafen and the villages of S. Valentino, S. Giacomo and
Tiso; the latter is famous for the geodes of Tiso, a quartz-amethyst crystal.
In summer as in winter a holiday in the Funes valley offers
many attractive possibilities: walking trails, hiking trails, paths next to
irrigation canals, trekking, guided mountain hikes, adventure hikes, thematic
walks, mountain walks, alpine, cultural, and fitness walks, sunset walks,
botanical trails; climbing, climbing courses, nature trails, the Nature Park
Puez-Odle, nordic walking, cycling, mountainbiking, golfing, horseback riding,
